China State Railway Group showcased an interactive mock cockpit of the next-generation CR450 electric multiple unit (EMU) and an intelligent train platform at the China International Import Expo, finance.biggo reported finance.biggo.comfinance.biggofinance.biggo.comOpen source ↗. The exhibition setup reproduces the control console, hardware layout, and audiovisual environment of the train, allowing visitors to simulate travel at 450 km/h under varying geographical and climatic conditions. An eight-car CR450 prototype was previously revealed in Beijing on December 29, 2024, following experimental runs where the platform achieved single-train speeds of 453 km/h and relative passing speeds of 896 km/h.

Technical platform and operational requirements

The CR450 development initiative was launched in 2021 as a major scientific research effort under China's 14th Five-Year Plan. The project addresses critical train systems, including permanent magnet traction drives, active vibration and noise mitigation, aerodynamic drag reduction, braking controls, and vehicle lightweighting. According to project engineers, increasing commercial operating velocities from 350 km/h to 400 km/h requires complete system-level coordination across wheel-rail interfaces, track geometry, power delivery, and signaling rather than modular component upgrades alone.

Network integration and commercial schedule

Policy frameworks and track infrastructure are being adapted to accommodate regular 400 km/h passenger service. China's National Railway Administration outlined plans for at least 20 demonstration scenarios, establishing matching criteria between rolling stock, bridges, tunnels, and catenary systems. In late November and late December, national rail operators will adjust timetables to introduce "X"-prefixed service designations specifically assigned to trainsets designed for operating limits of 350 km/h and above.

The Chengdu-Chongqing Middle Line High-Speed Railway, scheduled to open in 2027, was engineered from inception to support 400 km/h commercial operations, which would reduce transit time between both cities to roughly 50 minutes finance.biggo.comfinance.biggofinance.biggo.comOpen source ↗. By the end of 2025, China's high-speed rail network exceeded 50,000 kilometers, reaching 97.2% of cities with populations over 500,000. Additional lines under construction or planning, including second corridors linking Beijing–Shanghai and Shanghai–Hangzhou, are also positioned to implement higher-speed trainsets.
