Nagoya University researchers read membrane proteins and microRNAs in intact extracellular vesicles. In lab and patient samples, the method linked inflammation to its tissue of origin.
Drone counts of the entire range in 2022–2024 found about 27,800 breeding pairs on the Bounty Islands and 29,800 on the Antipodes, with opposite population trends.
Cryo-EM showed phage protein L05 assembles into a 9.5-megadalton particle, which could give researchers a simpler way to study vaults in human cells.
Edited cacao plants without T-DNA showed 42% smaller lesions after Phytophthora challenge in the lab. Field trials are now underway.
The California Insect Barcode Initiative reports that only about two-thirds of the state's insect species are described; over one million specimens were DNA barcoded.
Researchers report a toothbrush with piezoelectric bristles that damages oral bacteria. In a three-month trial with 115 adults, plaque and gum inflammation were lower.
An experimental toothbrush with PVDF filaments generates a charge that produces reactive oxygen species against oral bacteria. Lab and three-month human tests were reported.
Measurements from a research cruise show that Subantarctic Mode Water and Antarctic Intermediate Water enrich in nutrients differently as they move north for decades.
Sequencing of ancient DNA revealed a previously elusive population that entered Sweden by about 4,000 years ago, roughly 800 years later than the traditional date for Germanic's arrival.
Authors found that specific codon pairs cause −1 ribosomal frameshifting mainly in cancer cells and used it to switch on a pyroptosis gene in mouse tumour models.
A correlative X-ray method combining phase-contrast CT and small-angle scattering mapped nano- and microscale strain in intact rat discs under load.
In Drosophila erecta, food volatiles trigger male sexual arousal and start a visual feedback loop across the group. D. melanogaster does not depend on them for courtship.
University of Vienna researchers combined genomes with cave sediment DNA and found long-distance gene flow alongside regional continuity through the Last Glacial Maximum.
Authors analysed genome-wide data from 4,587 ancient individuals against four models of Celtic origin and favour a movement from eastern central Europe as the most parsimonious.
Two Nature studies by a team from Copenhagen and Leiden analysed DNA of over 4,500 ancient individuals; the authors tie migrations to the spread of Germanic and Celtic languages.
In blood samples from 34 patients with systemic lupus erythematosus, Nature authors found 271 splicing events absent in controls; peptides from them activated T cells in vitro.
Italian teams (Niguarda, IFOM, INGM) linked early-onset colorectal cancer to reactivated HERVH sequences; in organoids, ATR inhibitors reduced viability. The result is preclinical.
Spanish researchers placed 219 engineered circuits of four types in bacteria and found that chromosomal position alone modulates performance and switches dynamics, via expression noise.
Portuguese and UK groups deleted the EMC3 subunit in mouse and Drosophila tissues. Lipid droplet homeostasis was disrupted and levels of the protein FITM2 fell.
Molecular dynamics of Trp-cage cooled at seven rates, the slowest matching experiment, found small but observable population shifts and a way to correct them.
