Researchers from the University of Virginia School of Medicine have identified a neural mechanism in the brainstem responsible for stabilizing blood pressure during everyday transitions, according to lomazoma.com lomazoma.comlomazoma.comlomazoma.comOpen source ↗. Their findings, published in the journal Circulation Research, show that severe blood pressure fluctuations can occur even when standard measurements demonstrate normal average readings.

Neural control of vascular stability

Rapid and pronounced fluctuations in blood pressure have long been linked to elevated risks of cardiovascular disease, strokes, and brain damage. The team demonstrated that a small group of neurons located in the brainstem actively limits these fluctuations during typical daily activities. The brainstem regulates vital involuntary processes throughout the human body.

Experimental data indicated that the loss of merely several hundred of these specific nerve cells resulted in pronounced blood pressure instability. Crucially, the overall average blood pressure levels in these models remained within the normal range despite the recurring hemodynamic swings.

Implications for neurological disorders

These specialized neurons were previously noted in individuals diagnosed with multiple system atrophy lomazoma.comlomazoma.comlomazoma.comOpen source ↗. Multiple system atrophy represents a rare, fatal neurological condition related to Parkinson's disease that frequently causes severe impairments in autonomous vascular regulation.

The authors noted that these experimental findings raise the question of whether comparable dysfunction in this neuronal subpopulation contributes to unstable blood pressure in other medical conditions. Further research is required to verify whether this mechanism extends beyond this specific neurodegenerative disease.
