The SPLICE payload mapped terrain and assessed landing areas during a drone flight at Rogers Dry Lake, California. NASA reports the test raised the technology's readiness level.
Researchers at National Cheng Kung University found that the SLS launch changed ionospheric electron density by amounts equivalent to GPS errors of several meters.
ETH Zurich researchers built a prototype quadcopter whose deformable ring frame absorbs impacts, so it keeps flying after hitting obstacles at about 25 km/h.
The ETH Zurich prototype has a ring-shaped soft frame with no central body, reaches 80 km/h and kept flying after deliberate impacts at up to 25 km/h.
Researchers in Hong Kong and Toronto added a flexible foot pad to the single-legged hopping quadcopter, so it lands more consistently on ice, sand and rocks.
The aircraft takes off vertically and cruises like an aeroplane. The developers are preparing it for certification to deliver cargo to hard-to-reach villages.
