Researchers from Beijing Jiaotong University and other institutions have introduced an origami-inspired modular architecture that facilitates both binary and ternary mechanical computing. This advancement was reported in the journal Nature Communications. The architecture encodes logical mappings into its kinematic responses, allowing for the generation of discrete signals through the multi-stable states of Kresling origami configurations. These configurations enable signal switching, which supports operations ranging from basic logic gates to more complex arithmetic functions.

Mechanical Computing Architecture

The proposed architecture systematically demonstrates seven common logic gates and modular arithmetic half- and full-adders in both binary and ternary systems. This work highlights the challenges and opportunities in advancing multi-valued logic, providing a comparative analysis of the two systems. The torsional transitions among the origami states ensure effective signal switching, which is crucial for the performance of logic operations.

Implications for Future Technologies

This physical platform, along with its response-programming strategy, represents a simplified and generalized approach that could pave the way for higher-level mechanical computing mechanisms. The research emphasizes the potential of mechanical computing in applications such as intelligent metamaterials and robotics, particularly in extreme environments, where traditional computing architectures may face limitations.
