Boston Dynamics Inc. has introduced Stretch Gen 2, the latest version of its autonomous mobile trailer unloading robot, this week. With over 100,000 operating hours and tens of millions of boxes handled, the updated robot aims to maximize uptime and streamline maintenance. The company has been developing this new version for approximately two and a half years, focusing on simplification and improved reliability.

Stretch Gen 2 can unload up to 1,000 cases per hour, depending on factors like case weight and stacking order. It features a multipick capability, a battery that lasts for two shifts, and a fast charger that reaches 90% charge in about 75 minutes. Additionally, it includes onboard lighting for dark trailers and a pre-trained vision system that detects packages without programming.

The design improvements include a significant reduction in internal cabling by 81%, which minimizes weight and potential points of failure. Boston Dynamics collaborated with Hyundai to source a cable harness from the automotive supply chain, utilizing heavy-duty automotive-grade connectors to withstand vibrations during operation. Continuous rotation joints allow for more fluid movement, enhancing productivity and reducing mechanical stress.

The emergency stop button has been repositioned for better accessibility, and new materials for exterior panels reduce the risk of accidental safety stoppages. The upgraded gripper features new valve systems for improved grasping and placement, allowing for the handling of multiple boxes in a single motion, thereby increasing throughput.

Boston Dynamics has also focused on serviceability, making it easier to perform maintenance and repairs. The robot uses standardized high-strength fasteners, allowing for quicker repairs, such as a full swerve drive swap in just one hour. New onboard diagnostics and maintenance tools empower customers to perform routine service, reducing reliance on external support.

The redesigned onboard computing platform will receive regular software updates to enhance case detection and motion planning, with a reported 24% increase in unload rate across the fleet. Stretch Gen 2 is already operational at multiple customer sites, with positive feedback from users who previously handled heavy lifting tasks.
