A team of researchers from Beihang University in Beijing has developed a bioelectronic comb named "Detangle" that effectively treats androgenetic alopecia in mice. This innovative device combines hair combing with electrostimulation to deliver therapeutic genetic material directly into hair follicles. The study, published on nature.com, demonstrates that Detangle can restore nearly 100% of lost hair within 30 days, compared to approximately 70% with conventional topical minoxidil treatment.

Mechanism of Action

Detangle features electronic teeth embedded with height-differentiated electrodes and integrated drug-loading modules. This design generates an enhanced electric field that penetrates up to nine times deeper into hair follicle regions than traditional external applications. The localized electric field synchronizes the electro-stimulation of hair follicles while delivering vascular endothelial growth factor A encoding plasmid and steroid 5-alpha-reductase 2 targeting siRNA into follicular cells. This dual approach promotes angiogenesis and suppresses androgen synthesis, significantly increasing hair restoration efficacy in the androgenetic alopecia mouse model.

Implications for Treatment

Androgenetic alopecia affects over 1.5 billion individuals worldwide, leading to progressive hair loss and associated psychological burdens. Current pharmacological treatments face challenges due to systemic side effects from oral medications and limited efficacy of topical applications. The Detangle system offers a promising alternative by enabling deep tissue delivery in dermatology, potentially transforming treatment options for those affected by this condition. Further studies are needed to evaluate its effectiveness in human subjects, but the initial results are promising for future applications in hair loss treatment.
