Researchers at the University of Illinois have developed a fully deterministic, nonchaotic model that initially appears unpredictable but gradually self-organizes to reveal predictability through its dynamics. This research was published in the journal Nature Communications on September 11, 2026, and highlights the complexities of predicting outcomes in deterministic systems. The model demonstrates that even in nonchaotic systems, unpredictability can arise, challenging traditional notions of predictability in physics.

Unpredictability in Deterministic Systems

In deterministic systems, the final outcome is typically predetermined by the initial configuration and the governing rules. However, in chaotic systems, small deviations in initial conditions can lead to vastly different outcomes, complicating predictions. The Illinois team, led by Professor Hyun Youk, has shown that unpredictability can also emerge in systems that are not chaotic. Their research began over a decade ago, focusing on how simple deterministic rules can lead to complex dynamics in living systems.

The researchers utilized a cellular automaton (CA) model, which consists of a grid of cells that can exist in a finite number of states and change according to fixed rules. Their CA model mimics the behavior of living cells, where each cell can take on one of four states and change based on interactions with neighboring cells. Despite the deterministic nature of the model, predicting the final state from the initial configuration proved challenging, as even minor changes could lead to different outcomes.

Dynamics and Vortices

To explore the source of unpredictability, the team reimagined the states of the cells as directional arrows. This perspective revealed dynamic structures known as vortices, which were found to play a significant role in the system's behavior. The study emphasizes that the emergence of predictability in such systems is a complex process that unfolds over time, providing new insights into the nature of deterministic models and their applications in various scientific fields.
