Meteorological agencies have recorded an unprecedented early weakening of the Arctic polar vortex, according to lomazoma.com lomazoma.comlomazoma.comlomazoma.comOpen source ↗. Climate reconstructions extending back to the 1950s show that such an atmospheric disruption has never previously occurred before late November. Typically, during an El Niño year, this low-pressure system weakens later than usual, between January and March, which allows icy easterly winds to reach North America and Europe over subsequent weeks.

Météo-France stated that the ultimate consequences of this early shift remain uncertain. A spokesperson for the UK Met Office told AFP that early weakening could lead to less severe Arctic winds this year. This is because surface air temperatures in regions such as Siberia and across the wider Arctic have not yet dropped to the levels typically observed later in winter, specifically in February.
