Sodium-ion batteries for electric scooters enter mass production: what changes for buyers
Cheaper than lithium and unafraid of frost, but heavier for the same capacity. We explain which models will get the new cells first.

A battery manufacturer has announced the start of a production line for sodium-ion cells for micromobility. The first batches go to assemblers of electric scooters and warehouse equipment.
The main arguments are price and cold: sodium is cheaper than lithium, and the cells keep most of their capacity at minus twenty degrees. The price for this is mass: at the same capacity the battery is roughly a third heavier.
What it means for the vehicles
For a scooter that rides around a city in winter, the extra mass matters less than the ability to charge and deliver energy in the cold. For long-range electric cars sodium is not yet a competitor: there every kilogram counts.
