Astronomers have detected an unusual double-ring gas debris system around the white dwarf WD J132800.85–145019.95, as reported in a study published in Nature Astronomy. While 21 previously known gas-bearing circumstellar discs show double-peaked emission line profiles indicating a single rotating flat structure, observations of this system revealed quadruple-peaked emission lines [1].

Spectral data show that these lines originate from two distinct, separated gaseous rings around the host star. The inner gaseous ring spans from 0.14 solar radii to 0.34 solar radii, while the outer ring is positioned between 0.54 solar radii and 1.93 solar radii [1]. Prior gas detections in such remnants typically rely on ionic emission transitions, predominantly the near-infrared Ca II triplet.

The authors proposed that the stable double-disc architecture is sculpted by two separate planetary bodies embedded within the material. The estimated dimensions of these surviving bodies range from a few kilometres across to the size of Pluto [1]. According to the researchers, this configuration challenges current evolutionary models of planetary debris discs around white dwarfs.
