Flexcompute has introduced Physics Twin for Space Plume Impingement, a tool that simulates how rocket thruster exhaust affects nearby spacecraft in orbit, Interesting Engineering reports. According to the company, it is built on a Physics World Model and targets rendezvous and proximity operations (RPO) such as autonomous docking, satellite servicing and refueling. The tool evaluates forces, heating, erosion and contamination that exhaust causes on a neighboring vehicle. [1]

## Why plume impingement is hard to model

Exhaust from a thruster can destabilize nearby vehicles, damage outer surfaces or obscure navigation sensors. Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) has been used to predict these high-velocity particle collisions, but it requires large computational resources. As a result, mission teams can test only a limited number of flight paths, and typical methods take days for such calculations. [1]

Flexcompute's approach is called Tokenized Physics. It uses a novel Boltzmann solver within a unified framework to deliver DSMC-grade precision at higher speed. The architecture is based directly on physical laws, and, according to the company, the software adapts to new craft geometries and firing sequences without retraining. [1]

## Speed and accuracy figures

Han Park of Northrop Grumman Space Systems said the approach has the potential to speed up analysis by about 200 times compared with DSMC. In his words, this allows a much larger range of plume interaction scenarios to be explored, and for docking and refueling it means far more approach paths and firing sequences can be analyzed. [1]

The tool needs 0.4 GPU-hours per case (under three minutes on a single GPU), compared with 78 CPU-hours for hybrid DSMC setups. Against established simulation standards, total forces differ by less than 3.5 percent. Axial force stays within 2.84 percent of standard models, and heat flow within 3.35 percent. [1]

Flexcompute President and Co-founder Vera Yang said the space plume tool is only a start. The company is deploying its Physics Twins in other industries, from orbital particle dynamics to micro-scale warpage in advanced semiconductor packaging. [1]
