**Patients told hard from soft with their eyes closed. We look at how the pressure sensors work and what stands between a trial and a production prosthesis.**

A research group has reported the end of clinical trials of a hand prosthesis with tactile feedback. Pressure sensors in the fingers send a signal to the skin of the forearm, and the patient feels the force of the grip.

In the trial, participants with their eyes closed told hard objects from soft ones and adjusted the force so as not to crush fragile things.

## What comes next

The stage is part of the fact: the trials are over, but a production prosthesis still needs registration, manufacturing and training for doctors. The authors talk about several years.

## Our outlook

Feedback will become the standard for upper-limb prostheses, just as myoelectric drives have. For patients the main question is price and whether insurance programmes will cover it.
