NASA’s Perseverance rover landed in Jezero Crater, an area with an ancient delta, on Feb. 18, 2021. As of Oct. 11, it has driven 28.10 miles (45.22 kilometers), surpassing the previous record of 28.06 miles (45.16 kilometers) set by NASA’s Opportunity rover. This achievement comes on its 2,006th Martian day, or sol, completing the distance in about 5½ years compared to nearly 15 years for Opportunity.

## Record Distance
Perseverance's journey included traversing through a region called “Idubi,” located just beyond the western edge of Jezero Crater. Scientists believe this area contains some of the most ancient terrain ever studied in the solar system. The rover's advanced autonomous driving technology, known as AutoNav, enables it to analyze its surroundings and select safe routes while driving. This capability allows Perseverance to cover significant distances, with a maximum of 1,351 feet (412 meters) in a single Martian day.

## Advanced Navigation
Unlike earlier rovers, Perseverance can perform complex calculations while moving at high speeds. It evaluates 600,000 points of terrain data for navigation, a significant improvement over the 20 points used by the first Mars rover, Sojourner. NASA has authorized the first extension of the Perseverance mission, which began in October and is expected to continue through approximately the end of 2028. This ongoing exploration aims to uncover more about Mars' ancient history and geological features.
